A stay abroad is a valuable and unforgettable experience for students, but also represents an intercultural challenge. The confrontation with other cultures and customs - far away from home - can sometimes lead to homesickness, despite many wonderful experiences. In such cases, it can be very helpful to be interculturally prepared for this challenge in advance.
Living abroad does not necessarily lead to the development of intercultural competence. Supporting the intercultural learning process is therefore of great importance - before, during and after the stay abroad. The International Center and the Central Student Guidance and Counselling Services (ZSB) at the University of Wuppertal would like to help you with this.
Here you will find all the necessary information on intercultural preparation at the University of Wuppertal:
- The ZSB Wuppertal regularly offers intercultural training courses, for which you can register in advance
- You can also make use of the ZSB's intercultural counselling service (german only)
- Literature on culture shock and intercultural competence from the ZSB Wuppertal
- Linguistic preparation is essential for the development of intercultural competence. Please read the information we have compiled for you under the heading "Language preparation & language certificates".

- Many partner universities offer so-called buddy programmes. They enable support and accompaniment by students of the host university. In addition to assistance with questions and problems, this provides an opportunity to connect with local students. It is best to check the website of your host university for more information!
