What does it mean to be the first person in a family to go to university? What opportunities does this open up for your own future? These and other questions were the focus of the lecture series "Advancement through education?", which was held at the University of Wuppertal in the winter semester. The event will conclude on 29 January with a top-class panel discussion followed by an advice fair for current students and those who want to become students.

First-year students have an increased need for counselling, for example with regard to financing their studies. They also benefit from networking with other so-called FirstGen students. In other words, all those who also belong to the first generation in their family to study at university.

The University of Wuppertal provides a strong boost in terms of starting and progressing your studies: tips on financing your studies and opportunities to get to know each other will be offered at the student advice fair on 29 January 2025 from 3.45 p.m. in the foyer of Building K. Various foundations, associations and the central student guidance and counselling services of the University of Wuppertal will present their support services for first-year students and invite you to talk to them.

Before the fair, there will be a panel discussion on the topic "University as a place of equal opportunities?" (2.15 to 3.45 pm in Building K, Lecture Hall 32). In addition to three Wuppertal voices from the student and professor body, the Berlin sociologist Sabine Hark and the Cologne consultant Dr Rahab Njeri, who works in the field of anti-discrimination at the university there, will also have their say.

In addition to current and future first-year students, all members of the university and interested parties from outside are expressly invited to participate and exchange ideas.

The events are part of the mentoring programme's commitment to a successful first-year phase at BUW. It is organised by the mentors of the subjects English Studies (Dr Mariam Muwanga), History (Dr Astrid Albert) and Philosophy (Dr Bastian Ronge).
