The University of Wuppertal mourns the loss of Prof Dr Horst Weishaupt. Prof. Weishaupt headed the centre from 2005 to 2008, after which he was seconded to the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) in Frankfurt to head the "Governance and Financing of Education" unit (now: Structure and Governance of Education).

Horst Weishaupt made a significant contribution to the development of empirical educational research in Wuppertal. Even after his secondment to the DIPF, he continued to be involved in research and teaching at the University of Wuppertal and was a valued advisor in the establishment of the Institute for Educational Research.

Prof. Dr Kathrin Fußangel, Dean of the School of Education: "Horst Weishaupt played a key role in shaping and advising empirical educational research in Wuppertal and today's Institute of Educational Research. His work was characterised by his overall systemic view of education and upbringing, which led him, as he himself always said, not only to turn the small screws, but also to look at the big ones that hold the world of education and education systems together."

When he retired in 2013, the University of Wuppertal honoured him with the Rudolf Carnap Senior Professorship for three years in recognition of his outstanding achievements.
