Paul Heyse - citizen poet, prince of poets, Nobel Prize winner

On 5 December 2024, the Department of German Studies at the University of Wuppertal and the Goethe-Gesellschaft Wuppertal are hosting the conference "Paul Heyse - citizen poet, prince of poets, Nobel Prize winner". The event offers a varied programme on the Nobel Prize winner Paul Heyse (1830 - 1914) and highlights various aspects of his literary work and his social influence in the context of the 19th century. The event is aimed at all interested parties and admission is free.

The conference will be opened at 10 a.m. by the organisers Linus Richter and Prof. Dr. Anne-Rose Meyer. This will be followed by presentations on various topics:

  • 10.15 - 11 a.m.: PD Dr Georg Eckert (Wuppertal/Freiburg) will discuss "A man of letters among historians or a historian among men of letters? Paul Heyse and the understanding of history in the German Empire".
  • 11 - 11.45 a.m.: Prof. Dr Urszula Bonter (Wroclaw) talks about "Heyse's prose work in a contemporary context".
  • 12.15 - 13.00: Michael Schwedt MA (Wuppertal) analyses the novella Andrea Delfin in the lecture "Vom Scheitern mutiger Männer in schwierigen Zeiten" and draws parallels to the experiences of the German revolution of 1848/49.
  • 14.15 - 15.00: Prof. Dr Anne-Rose Meyer (Wuppertal) examines political aspects in the novellas Romulusenkel and Auferstanden in her lecture "Erzählen von Einheit und Zerfall".
  • 3 - 3.45 pm: Pauline Rützenhoff (Wuppertal) sheds light on the Christmas aspect of Heyse's work with her lecture "Weihnachten mit Paul Heyse" (Christmas with Paul Heyse).
  • 16.15 - 17.00: Linus Richter (Wuppertal) analyses "Gefangene Singvögel (1901) - eine verspätete Urnovelle Paul Heyses".
  • 17 - 17.45: PD Dr Arne Karsten (Wuppertal) will close the conference with a cultural-historical comparison in "From educational theatre to propaganda film - 'Kolberg' in Paul Heyse's drama (1864) and Veit Harlan's film adaptation (1945)".

The conference will take place in the senate room of the Bergische Universität in building K, room K.11.07 (Gaußstr. 20).

About the Goethe Society Wuppertal

The Goethe Society Wuppertal is a local organisation of the Weimar Goethe Society. Its aim is to promote knowledge of the Goethe era and Goethe's works. For over 30 years, the Goethe Society Wuppertal has provided a forum for discussions about literature and has worked closely with the University of Wuppertal and the Wuppertal theatres. The society organises academic and general interest lectures and poetry readings.
