His research focuses on finding out what fundamental and stable properties certain types of "spaces" have that are used in mathematics. These include, for example, the domains of definition of analytic functions in complex analysis or light ray spaces in the general theory of relativity.

Nemirovski studied mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow University, where he also obtained his doctorate in 1998. In 1999, he became a scientific member of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in the Russian capital and qualified as a professor there in 2007.

From 2001 to 2025, he conducted research at the Ruhr University Bochum as part of various German Research Foundation projects. Stefan Nemirovski has been a professor at the University of Wuppertal since April 2025.
