Turn of the year

Fireworks ban at the University of Wuppertal on New Year's Eve

Due to current construction work on the Grifflenberg campus and the experience from last year, pyrotechnics are banned at the University of Wuppertal on New Year's Eve in coordination with the fire brigade. This should not dampen the festive mood: Anyone out and about on the university campus at the turn of the year can enjoy the view of the fireworks in the valley.

"Last year, we were unfortunate enough to see some damage to buildings on the Grifflenberg campus due to the use of pyrotechnics. What's more, the entire Building G is currently wrapped in foil due to construction work. We don't want to run any risk of a New Year's Eve rocket causing major damage or even leading to a fire," explains Christian Schmersal, Head of Services in Infrastructural Building Management at the University of Wuppertal.

The ban explicitly refers to bringing and setting off fireworks of all kinds. Compliance will be monitored by the security service on New Year's Eve. The general stay on site to welcome the New Year together is still permitted.
