Diversity Day at the University of Wuppertal

24.04.2025|10:20 Uhr

On 27 May, to mark the nationwide Diversity Day, the University of Wuppertal invites you to a varied day of action under the motto "Classism in teaching and research" on the AStA level on the Grifflenberg campus. The day is aimed at all members of the university - students, teaching staff and employees - and is dedicated to the question of what role classism plays in the university context in various workshops and lectures.

Students and staff are invited to take part in the various formats from 12.00 to 17.30, engage in dialogue and take away ideas for their own everyday university life.

Programme overview:

12 to 1.15 pm: Brown Bag Lunch "Networking Diversity"
The focus is on interdisciplinary exchange on research focal points relating to diversity at the University of Wuppertal. A "speed dating" session will open up new perspectives and initiate future collaborations.

1.30 to 2.30 pm: Keynote speech by Markus Rieger-Ladich on the topic "Not so easy: Raising your own voice"
The Tübingen professor of general educational sciences researches educational advancement, class transitions and educational privileges.

2.45 to 3.30 pm: Presentation of Arbeiterkind.de with privilege check
The initiative presents its work to support students from non-academic families. Afterwards, everyone is invited to reflect on their own experiences: "How difficult was my path really and what is still noticeable in everyday university life today?"

3.30 to 5.30 pm: Workshops & discussion on the topic of "Utopia or vision: anti-classism at university"

Two workshop blocks are dedicated to specific aspects of classism in the university context:

  • Hidden Curriculum - (dis)belonging: In the workshop, participants will explore the unspoken rules and social expectations that characterise learning and teaching at universities - the so-called hidden curriculum. They will reflect on how such norms can promote or prevent belonging and what role their own expectations of students play in this. Questions about (dis)belonging, social dynamics and support needs will be used to create space for dialogue and a change of perspective. The aim is to develop sensitivity for hidden exclusions and to jointly develop options for action.
  • Classism in the seminar room, office hours and the like: This workshop is dedicated to addressing classism in the university context - i.e. devaluation or discrimination based on social background or economic situation. Together, we will reflect on how classism manifests itself in seminars, office hours or in access to resources, what effects it has on affiliation and career paths and how social background shapes academic interaction. The focus will be on sharing experiences, making barriers visible and the question of what support people affected by classism need - for a university environment that recognises social inequalities and actively counteracts them.

From 5.30 pm: Concluding together

The event is organised by the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Unit, the Anti-Discrimination Office, Arbeiterkind.de, the School of Education, the Institute of Psychology and Mentoring and Quality Assurance at the School of Humanities.
