Sustainability
University of Wuppertal also focusses on sustainability in its own operations
Keeping the temperature in the university's own buildings comfortable while still conserving resources as much as possible was once again a topic for the University of Wuppertal's committees this autumn. As a result, the Senate and Rectorate agreed that heating temperatures will also be regulated in the winter of 2024/2025. "By limiting the room temperature systemically, we are acting responsibly and helping to conserve valuable resources," said Dr Ursula Löffler, Chancellor of the University of Wuppertal. This year, a target corridor of 19 to 20 °C has been agreed. In order to meet the needs of employees and students, last year's experiences and feedback from the university's ranks were analysed and discussed with the Senate.
1,600 four-person households saved
The Head of Administration admits that, due to the age of most of the university buildings, it is not easy to guarantee uniform temperatures throughout, especially at the beginning of the heating period, but the measure can ultimately be stabilised. Last winter already proved that the effort is worth it. During the 2023/2024 heating period, the university saved a total of around 8,000,000 kWh of energy at its three sites on Grifflenberg, Freudenberg and Haspel. "This corresponds to the average electricity consumption and hot water production of over 1,600 four-person households," said the Chancellor. At the same time, 200,000 kg lessCO2 was consumed, which is equivalent to around 550 flights from Düsseldorf to Berlin for one person. So the figures speak for themselves. However, it is particularly important to involve employees and students and to communicate the benefits for the environment, climate and university.
