New edition of "Wissenschaft weltoffen"
Germany has defended its place among the world's four most popular study locations in the Corona pandemic. The number of all enrolled international students actually rose slightly to 325,000, but the number of first-year students from abroad fell by 20 percent. There was a significant increase in the number of international students studying exclusively digitally. For the first time, the mobility of scientists was also evaluated for "Wissenschaft weltoffen 2021" on the basis of bibliometric data.
Last year, 64,000 international first-year students began their studies in Germany. Compared to the year before the Corona pandemic, this is a decrease of 15,000 first-year students from abroad, or around 20 percent. The development is in line with the expectations that the DAAD had surveyed among its member universities in March. For the coming winter semester, the DAAD expects the numbers to stabilize.
