Erasmus+ studies abroad program

The University of Wuppertal promotes international student exchanges as part of the EU Erasmus+ program (Key Action 1). This makes the Erasmus+ program the largest mobility program at the University of Wuppertal. Students can apply for a place at an Erasmus+ partner university in their subject area.

The most important facts in brief

Key facts

  • Study abroad in Europe
  • At a partner university of your faculty
  • For 1 or 2 semesters
  • Tuition fee waiver at the partner university plus financial support
  • Recognition of study and examination achievements abroad
  • Supervision by the university of Wuppertal and the host university

Mobility grant

  • Monthly financial grant for the stay abroad. This usually does not fully cover the costs abroad.  The amount of the grant is recalculated annually.
  • The Erasmus+ program countries are divided into three country categories; the monthly financial grant in each category is based on the cost of living:

Erasmus+ funding at the University of Wuppertal is available for a maximum of 4 months (1 semester) in the academic year 2023/2024, or 8 months for 2 semesters, with a maximum funding period of 360 days per study period.

The Erasmus+ mobility grant will be paid to you in two instalments. You will receive 80% of the mobility grant at the beginning of your stay abroad. After the documents to be submitted at the end (after the mobility) have been submitted on time, the remaining 20% of the mobility grant will be paid out.

You can spend up to 12 months abroad with Erasmus+ per study phase (Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate).
A second degree program does not increase your entitlement to funding.

Previous Erasmus internships abroad and Erasmus funding from another university are taken into account.

  • all 27 EU member states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.
  • Program countries outside the EU: Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, United Kingdom (associated partner country of Region 14 from 2021)*
  • Mobilities to and from overseas countries and territories can be funded via Erasmus+. List of overseas countries and territories defined in Council Decision 2013/755/EU and 2014/137/EU can be found here.

*Brexit: The terms of the withdrawal agreement of January 31, 2020 stipulate that the United Kingdom will only participate in the expiring Erasmus+ programme generation (2014-2020). In the new programme generation (2021-2027), the United Kingdom will be eligible as a partner country that is not associated with the Erasmus+ programme. Funding is still possible. Applications can also be submitted via Mobility Online.

In total, the university of Wuppertal works with around 200 partner universities in 23 European countries (current list of countries).

  • Students fully enrolled in a Bachelor's/Master's/PhD programme or an expiring diploma program at the University of Wuppertal are eligible for funding;
  • Study visits are eligible for funding from the first university/study year onwards.

  • Erasmus+ students are exempt from paying tuition fees at the host university;
  • Students can take a leave of absence from the University of Wuppertal to study abroad for at least three months.

In the Erasmus study program, the individual subjects conclude agreements with partner universities in Europe. You can therefore only apply for places at universities that cooperate with your subject. You can find an overview of Erasmus partnerships on the website of your Erasmus subject coordinator or in the Mobility-Online search portal for exchange programs.

  1. The Erasmus+ faculty coordinators and the International Office provide organisational support at the home and host universities (e.g. in finding accommodation and preparing for your studies abroad in terms of subject and language).
  2. Academic recognition of academic achievements abroad. Before you leave, you will conclude a Learning Agreement with the relevant Examination Board, in which your learning objectives and the recognition of your achievements abroad are agreed.

  • Students can be funded several times, for up to 12 months in each study cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate).
  • The quota of 12 months per study cycle can be flexibly divided between study abroad and internships.
  • For single-cycle degree programmes (e.g. diploma programmes), a total quota of 24 funding months applies.

Erasmus+ Online Language Support (OLS):

  • In the Erasmus+ program, grantees also receive access to Online Language Support (OLS) to help students improve their knowledge of the language in which they are studying or doing their internship abroad. OLS makes language support accessible in a flexible and easy way and contributes to the promotion of language learning and linguistic diversity.

You can only apply for an Erasmus+ study place via the "Mobility Online" portal.
