Recognition of academic achievements abroad

As part of the ECTS procedure, a learning agreement (for international university co-operations | Erasmus+) is concluded, which - especially for study visits to host universities - ensures the recognition of academic achievements in advance through agreements with the home and host universities.

For Erasmus+ studies abroad and a semester abroad as part of the PROMOS programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a learning agreement must be drawn up in good time before the start of the stay. For other stays abroad, the learning agreement should also be prepared before the start of the stay in order to enable subsequent recognition of the achievements from abroad at BUW (e.g. for other DAAD scholarships or for stays abroad without funding).
Changes required at short notice can be noted in the second part of the Learning Agreement "Changes to the original Learning Agreement" and must be signed by all parties within one month.

Questions regarding recognition should be clarified with the responsible examination board (or coordinator) before the start of the stay abroad. This person is usually also responsible for signing the learning agreement. The study programme at the host university should be discussed with the faculty coordinator for the respective partner university and approved by the examination board.

For the recognition of academic achievements from abroad, the process is significantly simplified if you provide the coordinator or the examination board with comprehensive information about the completed achievements. In addition to the transcript of records from the foreign university, this can include, for example, module or lecture plans from the host university - with precise details of the course content and the time required - or copies of assignments/presentations from abroad.

The subsequent recognition of academic achievements from abroad requires that students have their academic achievements confirmed by the host university through an official transcript of records and that the courses to be taken are recorded in the learning agreement before departure. This must be signed by the student, the faculty (through the responsible examination office or the faculty coordinator responsible for recognition), and the International Office of BUW as well as the host university.

The Rectorate has established a central contact point for student submissions concerning the quality of teaching and study conditions that cannot be resolved within the department or by the decentralised quality officers of the faculties. Further information can be found here.
