Stay abroad with a child
At first glance, a stay abroad with a child seems almost impossible for many people. Finding suitable childcare locally, the possible temporary separation from one parent - does the child possibly also have to be deregistered from the German school for the time abroad? These are some of the (supposed) obstacles that make most parents lose hope of a longer stay abroad. However, with the necessary preparation and counselling, a stay abroad with a child can be arranged.
At this point, we would like to point out a few organisations and websites that provide initial information on the topic:
- You can apply for special funding within the Erasmus+ programme. Further information on Erasmus+ study abroad or an Erasmus+ internship abroad as well as on Erasmus+ special funding for students with children can also be found on our website.

Students who take their child/children with them to an Erasmus+ study abroad programme country and are single parents during their studies abroad can receive special funding as a lump sum.
In addition to the regular Erasmus+ funding according to the scholarship rates of the University of Wuppertal, the following monthly lump sums can be granted:
- EUR 250 regardless of the number of children
The total monthly funding (incl. lump sum for children) is limited to the maximum rates of the country groups.
Students with child(ren) who would like to apply for special funding as a lump sum should submit the following documents to the International Office before starting their studies abroad:
- Copy of birth certificate(s)
- Proof of the child's accompanying stay (e.g. travel documents).
