BAföG/student finance services abroad provide financial support for students who are studying or doing an internship abroad. BAföG/student finance services are paid half as a grant and half as an interest-free loan that must be repaid.

Students who have their permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany can receive BAföG/student finance services funding for a subject-related study period abroad. This also applies if someone wishes to complete their compulsory internship abroad.

An overview can be found in the flyer "With BAföG/student finance services abroad" .
Please also contact the BAföG/student finance services responsible for your region abroad. You can find an overview of all responsible BAföG/student finance services in the above-mentioned flyer. Remember to apply for BAföG/student finance services abroad about a year, at the latest 6 months, before the start of your stay abroad.

You can also find further information on the official BAföG/student finance services website.

  • Within the EU and Switzerland, study abroad can be funded from the start until the foreign qualification is obtained;
  • Education abroad outside the EU or Switzerland can generally be funded for a maximum of one year or, for special reasons, up to two and a half years. It must be ensured that the academic achievements completed abroad can be at least partially credited to the domestic training programme;
  • The minimum period of study abroad is six months or one semester, for an internship or study programme as part of a university cooperation twelve weeks;
  • Internships abroad can be funded if, among other things, they are beneficial in terms of the level of education, fulfil a minimum duration of 12 weeks and meet the requirements of the examination regulations.

  • If applicable, allowances for verifiably necessary tuition fees (up to € 4,600 for a maximum of one year),
  • travel costs (one-off outward & return journey)
  • a supplement for health insurance,
  • for a stay abroad outside the EU and Switzerland, possibly a foreign supplement to equalise purchasing power,
  • benefits under the BAföG/student finance services abroad supplement regulation are generally granted as a supplement and therefore do not need to be repaid.

Use the BAföG calculator on the "BAföG" website to calculate your exact funding amount online.

If students receive other scholarships in addition to the BAföG/student finance services abroad, these are generally not counted towards the BAföG requirement up to an amount of €300.00.

See "Exemption from performance-related scholarships abroad", § 21 para. 3 no. 2 BAföG, 02/02/2011.

In individual cases, please contact the responsible BAföG/student finance services or the respective scholarship provider.

Important: Even if you do not receive "domestic BAföG", you should apply for BAföG/student finance services abroad. The higher funding rates for a stay abroad can mean that students who do not receive funding in Germany - due to the level of their parents' income - can also receive funding.
