Continuing education in other European countries with Erasmus+

As part of the "Mobility for University Staff" programme, employees of the University of Wuppertal can complete short stays abroad for further education and training purposes in other European countries and receive Erasmus+ funding for this.

The most important facts in brief

Funding for continuing education and training activities in other European countries

Duration: 2-60 consecutive days (usually 5 working days + travelling to and from)

Erasmus+ funding: fixed unit costs (lump sums) for travel and accommodation costs

As part of the "Mobility for University Staff" programme, Erasmus+ offers staff and lecturers at the University of Wuppertal the opportunity to strengthen their professional development through further training measures in other European countries. The continuing education and training programme is coordinated with the home university and primarily serves to promote professional exchange, strengthen personal skills and expand and deepen networks.

Possible target countries are basically

  • the EU member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus
  • the programme countries Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey
  • Overseas territories: Although Erasmus+ funding in overseas countries and territories is in line with the programme, it is subject to the rules of the programme and the agreements applicable to its member state. Example: For funding to Curação, the funding rate for the Netherlands applies.

Important: An Erasmus+-funded stay for continuing education and training purposes can be completed at a partner university of the University of Wuppertal or at an institution active in the labour market or in the fields of education and training.

Grants for mobility for continuing education and training purposes can be awarded to employees working in the following areas of the University of Wuppertal:

  • General and technical administration
  • Library
  • Faculties
  • Finances
  • International Centre
  • International Student Administration Office
  • Public Relations
  • Student Counselling
  • Technology and Transfer
  • Continuing education

Possible further education and training formats:

  • Work shadowing
  • Job shadowing
  • Study visits
  • Participation in curriculum development (lecturers)
  • Participation in workshops and seminars
  • Participation in language courses

Specific training programmes and further information on staff training events can be found on the following online platforms:

Please note: First-time travellers have priority for funding approval. Individual trips are also prioritised over language trips. However, repeated funding is generally possible depending on the availability of funds.

Note for teachers: You can also combine further education and training with an Erasmus+ mobility for teaching purposes and thus reduce the prescribed teaching load for an Erasmus+ teaching mobility.

Erasmus+ funding is available for 2-60 consecutive days, whereby short stays of up to five working days plus two days for travelling to and from the university can generally be funded. As Erasmus+ funding is limited, the University of Wuppertal would like to offer as many employees as possible the opportunity to take part in training activities in other European countries.

  • the training and continuing education activities have added value for your work at the University of Wuppertal
  • the mobility has been discussed with your supervisor
  • the host institution is a reputable institution that is active on the labour market or in the fields of education or vocational training.

Erasmus+ funding

Participants receive fixed unit costs (lump sums) for travel and accommodation costs from Erasmus+ funds.

The Erasmus+ mobility grant is paid out in two instalments. Participants receive 80% of the mobility grant at the beginning of their stay abroad. Once the documents to be submitted at the end (after the mobility) have been submitted on time, the remaining 20% of the mobility grant will be paid out.

The unit costs are made up of travel and subsistence allowances and are calculated as follows:

Travelling expenses

The distance is calculated solely using the EU Commission's Distance Calculator.

One-way distance according to distance calculator amount (unit costs) per participant (= return journey)
10 - 99 km 20 Euro
100 - 499 km 180 Euro
500 - 1,999 km 275 Euro

3,000 - 3,999 km 530 Euro

The unit costs for the stay are only awarded for days on which an activity for teaching purposes actually took place. If a sponsored person voluntarily stays longer on site, he/she must pay for the expenses him/herself.
