BUW-Senior Fellowship
The research landscape at the University of Wuppertal is diverse and constantly changing with new projects and innovative ideas. At the heart of this progress is the individual scientific excellence of our researchers.
In order to further promote this creativity and to offer greater flexibility in research, the University of Wuppertal has created Senior Fellowships to support established, excellent researchers who want to reorient their research or significantly expand their field of research. The aim is to increase the visibility of BUW, the acquisition of external funding and the attractiveness of Wuppertal as a location for outstanding researchers.
Applications can be submitted once a year.

FAQ on the BUW Senior Fellowship
Professors with a proven track record of excellence in their field of research, who have been at BUW for at least 10 years and who have made a national and international impact in their field are eligible to apply.
The nature and scale of the funding requested must be appropriate and plausible. The maximum amount of funding per application is €500,000. Funding is tied to individuals and the BUW for a period of up to 5 years.
The following criteria will be used for the evaluation, taking into account the specificities of the different disciplines:
Scientific career:
- High national and, if possible, international scientific visibility of the applicant (through invitations to speak at conferences, organisation of conferences, participation in research projects, research expeditions, cooperation partners).
- Amount and significance of previous external funding
- Publications in (international) peer-reviewed scientific journals or monographs (citation index)
- Other scientific achievements (e.g. prizes/awards, patents, memberships in academies, etc.)
- BUW internal commitment
- Supervision of excellent doctoral students
Type of project:
- Project with a clear reorientation that expands one's own established research portfolio
- Justification of the outstanding importance or special attractiveness of the planned project for BUW
- Statement of objectives, research question, methodology and expected results of the planned project, as well as work plan and schedule
You can apply once a year. If you are not selected in one year due to the strength of the applicant pool, you may reapply the following year. Once a BUW Senior Fellowship has been awarded, no further applications are possible.
