BUW-internal support for research

The University of Wuppertal is committed to excellence in research across its nine schools and interdisciplinary centres, offering a highly attractive environment for our researchers.

In 2023, FORIS, an intra-university research funding programme, was launched to provide BUW researchers with additional opportunities to turn their project ideas into reality, thereby contributing to a dynamic research landscape in Wuppertal. The objective of FORIS is to:

  • to increase the volume of external funding at the BUW,
  • to increase the attractiveness of the BUW for young researchers
  • to improve the BUW's networking and visibility
  • to identify new, forward-looking fields of research within the BUW.

FORIS offers financial support for a diverse range of research ideas and concepts through four distinct funding lines.

The BUW Start pillar offers specialised support to young researchers on their way to establishing their own professorship and an independent academic career.

BUW Vernetzt places a particular emphasis on fostering collaboration between researchers from different disciplines. The objective is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and explore new methodological approaches, while also promoting the collaborative preparation of specific research proposals on an international level.

It is often the case that proposal ideas require only a small financial "push" to be ready for submission. The BUW Individuell pillar is the appropriate avenue for this. Smaller financial amounts are intended to provide researchers with the opportunity to submit proposals, take advantage of short-term coaching or organise other scientific formats such as conferences and congresses.

Please note that FORIS does not provide interim financing for personnel, bridging funds, the "own position", basic equipment or other funding gaps. The Rectorate, in consultation with the Commission for Research and Digitalization, has the authority to approve funding through FORIS.

Four pillars of promotion
