Horizon 2020 is the European Union's framework programme for research and innovation 2014-2020. Proposals can no longer be submitted under this programme, but only under the successor programme Horizon Europe (2021-2027).

Open Access
Open Access is mandatory for publications in H2020.
Data management
Free access to research data should also be guaranteed in accordance with the principle "as open as possible - as limited as necessary". When managing research data, researchers should be guided by the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability).
Ethics
Ethics is an integral part of all EU-funded research projects. Ethical compliance is considered crucial to achieve true research excellence.
Communication/dissemination/exploitation
Utilisation of genetic resources (ABS legislation/Nagoya Protocol)
As a beneficiary of EU research funding, you are obliged to determine whether your project falls within the scope of the ABS (Access and Benefit Sharing) legislation when utilising genetic resources and, if so, to ensure that your project complies with it.
Utilisation of genetic resources within the context of the EU Regulation means the conduct of research and/or development activities on a genetic resource and/or biochemical composition of genetic resources or the utilisation of traditional knowledge associated with it.

Participation rules
As a rule, at least three independent institutions from three different EU Member States or countries associated with the Framework Programme must participate in the project.

On the participation of the United Kingdom after Brexit
Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Israel, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Tunisia, Georgia
Third countries listed in the work programme are also eligible.
Legal framework
Project-specific grant agreement concluded between the European Commission and the coordinator. The other project partners join this grant agreement. It complies with the provisions of the Framework Programme Regulation, the Rules for Participation and the EU Financial Regulation.
