How a novella found its way onto the Internet:

Bergische Universität invites to literary talk of the town

Arthur Schnitzler's "Fräulein Else" is the focus of a literary evening on November 22 at the Theater am Engelsgarten: actress Lena Vogt will read the work, while historian Arne Karsten will shed light on the possible real-life background of the novella. In addition, literary scholars Prof. Dr. Michael Scheffel and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lukas will use the novella to provide insights into the research project "Arthur Schnitzler digital".

The Bergische Universität, the University of Cambridge and the University College London are behind the project in cooperation with the Cambridge University Library, the German Literature Archive Marbach, the Arthur Schnitzler Archive Freiburg and the Trier Center for Digital Humanities. The aim is to develop a digital historical-critical edition of Arthur Schnitzler's work, which was published from 1905 onwards, and to publish it as part of a publicly accessible online platform. "Fräulein Else", the first novella by the Austrian writer, was published on this platform in August 2018.

The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. and marks the start of a new series of events at Bergische Universität. Tickets for the first Stadtgespräch are available for 9 euros at www.wuppertaler-buehnen.de.

Date: Thursday, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m.; Location: Theater am Engelsgarten, Engelsstr. 18, 42283 Wuppertal, Germany.
